Inspiration Over Jealousy: A Lesson from Convention Weekend

This past weekend at convention, several of our pre-teen and teen dancers came back from class talking about something that really stuck with them.

One of the teachers spoke about the idea of choosing inspiration instead of jealousy.

In rooms full of talented dancers, it can be very easy to start comparing yourself to the person next to you. Someone might turn faster. Someone might pick up choreography more quickly. Someone might get called out for an opportunity you hoped for.

That moment — the moment where comparison begins — is where a dancer makes a choice.

You can feel jealous.

Or you can feel inspired.

Jealousy keeps you stuck. It pulls your focus away from your own growth and places it on someone else’s path. Inspiration does the opposite. It reminds you that what you are seeing is possible. It turns comparison into motivation.

Instead of thinking, “Why can’t I do that?” the mindset shifts to “What can I learn from that?”

Dance is such a unique art form because it blends athleticism with artistry. Watching another dancer perform beautifully can be incredibly inspiring. Their movement quality, musicality, emotion, or performance energy might spark something in you. Instead of feeling threatened by it, dancers can learn to appreciate it — to recognize the artistry and let it push them forward.

Another important realization that came up in conversations with our dancers this weekend is that every dancer has different strengths.

One dancer might have incredible turns. Another might be a natural performer. Someone else might be especially musical or expressive. No one person will be the best at everything — and that’s part of what makes dance so interesting and collaborative.

When dancers recognize that everyone brings something different to the room, comparison begins to shift. Instead of measuring themselves against someone else’s strengths, they start focusing on their own growth.

The most valuable comparison a dancer can make is with themselves.

Who were you yesterday?

What can you do today that you couldn’t do last month?

How have you grown since the beginning of the season?

That kind of comparison is powerful because it keeps dancers moving forward.

Convention weekends are full of these moments. Dancers take class with hundreds of other students from different studios and backgrounds, all learning together in the same room. It can feel intimidating at first, but it can also be incredibly motivating.

As a studio owner and teacher, I am deeply grateful that we can place our dancers in environments where this kind of inspiration happens. We choose conventions and events carefully, looking for faculty who lead with strong values, mentorship, and professionalism.

Leadership starts at the top. When dancers learn from teachers who emphasize growth, respect, artistry, and hard work, those lessons ripple outward into the room.

And this weekend, it was wonderful to hear our dancers come back talking about exactly that.

They were inspired by the dancers around them. Inspired by the faculty. Inspired by the work happening in the room.

And that is exactly what these experiences are meant to do.

Because in the end, dance is not about being better than someone else. It’s about becoming a stronger, more confident, more expressive version of yourself.

Choosing inspiration over jealousy is one step in that journey.

And it’s a lesson that reaches far beyond the dance floor.
